How To Figure Out Your Life Purpose

Were we put on this Earth for a reason? Some would say "yes". Others would argue "no". I would answer "yes".

For the purpose of this post, let's go with my line of thinking. And let's ask ourselves a few questions to gain clarity:

- What are you passionate about?
- What do you spend your time thinking about?
- What do you spend your time doing?
- What problems do you actually enjoy solving?
- How are you making/will you make this world a better place?

I asked myself these questions and came to the following conclusions:

- I am passionate about travel, learning languages and learning about cultures
- I spend my time thinking about these things, and doing them whenever possible
- I enjoy solving the problems that hold people back from being able to do these things

I therefore believe that my life purpose is to provide the following value:
- To educate the world on how travel can transform our lives
- To show others how learning languages can foster genuine and meaningful relationships
- To help people realize that by better understanding other cultures and groups of people, we eliminate ignorance -- which in turn eradicates fear, hatred and violence -- leading to a more peaceful planet for us all!

What's your life purpose?

Words: White Magic Vs. Black Magic

Our words. They are magical. They can be used as white magic or black magic.

Our words have the power to inspire. To uplift. To motivate and encourage.

Our words also have the power to disparage. To bring down. To weaken and to destroy.

When I was younger, I used words as black magic. I expressed negativity. I complained constantly. I gossiped. I spoke poorly about others. I didn't have nice things to say. I didn't realize the effect that my words had on others. And to all those who were affected by my black magic back then, I owe each and every one of you an apology.

As I grew older, I became aware of the power of words. I began using white magic and experiencing its effects. I saw the power of using words to motivate and inspire. To support. To empathize. To encourage. This, I have found, is a much more useful, helpful, and synergistic form of magic.

So let's use our magic for good and not for evil!

Think deeply for a moment, do you cast spells of white magic or black magic?

A special shoutout here to Don Miguel Ruiz for writing The Four Agreements. His powerful ideas inspired me to write this post. He deserves credit for these ideas, especially the concept of words having the capability to be used as black and white magic as he describes in his book.

Language, Culture, and Connections

The relationship between language and culture is very strong.

Languages represent the needs and desires of a group of people. Those needs and desires cannot always be translated perfectly from one language to another. For example, the Yupik and Inuktitut languages, spoken by the Eskimos, include many more words for variations of snow than the English language does. This is because their environment requires snow to be described in greater detail than in other environments where snowfall is less abundant and/or important.

Learning a language is the key to unlocking the hearts and minds of those who speak it. It is a path that leads to true understanding. An understanding of people's most important needs. An understanding of people's deepest desires. With this understanding comes a deeper connection and a more fulfilling relationship. One of harmony and respect.

Learning a new language allows us to understand people and cultures on a more profound level. By doing so, we reduce ignorance, hatred, and violence, ultimately making this planet a more peaceful place for all!

I studied Spanish in middle school, high school, and majored in it during university. I spent a semester in Buenos Aires, Argentina practicing the language with my host family and other porteños (what people from Buenos Aires refer to themselves as). I have continued honing my skills by practicing with locals and fellow travelers on trips to locations where Spanish is the primary language spoken. I also speak it with friends, family, and others I meet, so long as I sense they are comfortable communicating in Spanish. By learning a new language, I have created and maintained rich and fulfilling relationships. And I want the same for you.

Have you learned another language? If so, how did you do it and what advice would you offer?
